Pate became Professor of Media and Society on October 20, 2007.
Mass Communication: Pate graduated with a degree in Mass communication in 1987 and then bagged Master of Philosophy University of Ghana, Legon and Phd at University of Maiduguri in 1990 and 1997 respectively .
UNESCO Publications: Pate has served as a consultant for several organizations including UNESCO, and has been appointed by UNESCO in Paris as a director representing Africa on the Six persons Board of Directors of the prestigious International Network of UNESCO Professors in Communication (ORBICOM) .
Professor Umaru Pate is among guru broadcasters contesting for the National President of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters in the 1st National Conference of the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters holding on Wednesday 14th- Thursday 15th August 2024 at Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja.
The forum which drew professionals, media gurus, academics and broadcasters from 36 states and Abuja has the theme, “Broadcasting and the Political Economy of content production in the Digital Age: The Nigerian Perspective “.
The National Conference is also has Alhaji Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Bar.Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Abuja and 20 panelists.
Also, the idea and efforts of this professional body could be traced to 1962 by late Ambassador Segun Olushola and in 1978, the Society of Nigerian Broadcasters ( SNB) was handed over to Ambassador Yemi Farounki and it was duly registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission on 3rd March,1994 with the headquarters at NTA, Victoria Island, Lagos.
This great society is a platform and source of inspiration for both serving and retired broadcasters and also serves as a think-tank on matters relating to broadcasting and other related issues. The society as registered with Corporate Affairs Commission has four directors namely Ambassador Yemi Farounki, Elder Doran Orekunrin, Alhaji Abdulrahman Micika and Mr.Ikenna Ndaguba
The vision, no doubt, is to serve as advocacy body for the broadcast industry in Nigeria and has the mission of laying down standards of knowledge, training and experience in the art, science and techniques of broadcasting appropriate to the various grades of membership of the society.
The objectives of SNB is to monitor and control the conduct of the practice of broadcasting profession, serve as advocacy body for the industry among others.
The prescribing, determining and setting the standard of knowledge and skills to be attained by persons seeking to become members of the Broadcasting profession and reviewing those standards from time to time.
Formal admission, certification and registration of persons seeking to become broadcasting practitioners and conducting examinations in the profession and awarding certificates or diploma certificates to successful candidates as and when appropriate.
It was on the sound philosophy of the founders that Professor Umaru Pate brought himself out to take this great, formidable society to greater heights both nationally and internationally.
