Gombe Network of Civil Society on Tuesday commiserated with the people of Maiduguri, urging from international organisations to ameliorate the hardship faced by victims of the flood.
This was contained in a press statement signed by the Chairman Ibrahim Yusuf, which was made available to PERISCOPE NIGERIA.

Our correspondent had reported that the devastating flood was caused by the breakdown of Alau dam in Maiduguri, Borno State.
Yusuf’s statement partly read, “It is with deep sorrow that we, the Gombe Network of Civil Society (GONET), extend our heartfelt condolences to the people of Maiduguri and the entire Borno State following the devastating floods that have caused widespread displacement, destruction of homes, and severe damage to critical infrastructure. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected, particularly families who have lost their homes and are struggling to survive during this difficult time.
“The collapse of the water channels connected to the Alau Dam has led to catastrophic flooding, rendering many communities in Maiduguri stranded and cut off. The floods have submerged key areas, including the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the Shehu of Borno’s Palace, and countless residential neighbourhoods, compounding the distress and hardship faced by the residents.
“In light of this dire situation, GONET is calling for immediate international support to provide relief to the victims of this disaster. We appeal to global humanitarian agencies, international organizations, and donor partners to provide urgent assistance to the affected families. Essential items such as food, clean water, medicine, clothing, and temporary shelters are desperately needed to address the immediate needs of those displaced.”
While commending the ongoing efforts by local authorities, citizens, and volunteers who have been working tirelessly to provide emergency relief, Yusuf called for a more robust and coordinated international response, adding that such is required to ensure that the affected communities receive the support they need.
“We call on major humanitarian organizations such as the United Nations, the International Red Cross, and other global relief agencies to prioritize aid to Maiduguri and surrounding areas. The provision of immediate assistance will help mitigate the impact of the floods and support the Borno State government in managing this crisis.
“At GONET, we stand in solidarity with the people of Maiduguri and Borno State during this challenging time. We remain hopeful that swift international intervention will alleviate the suffering and restore hope to those affected by this tragedy,” the statement added.
