The House of Representatives Minority Whip; Ali Isa, on Monday urged the Chief of Naval Staff Emmanuel Ogalla, to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against Brig.Gen. MS Adamu.
Adamu was alleged to have brutalised Seaman Abass Haruna, an indigene of Gombe State.
The lawmaker in a statement which he personally signed berated the army officer for causing Haruna mental disorder during a joint special military assignment in Taraba State.
The representative of Billiri/Balanga Federal Constituency said, “Over the weekend, a very sad and disappointing story has been going round, arising from a report broadcast by the Brekete Family Radio Station in Abuja – a well-known human rights advocacy radio station -concerning how a certain
Naval personnel named Seaman Abbas Haruna, who hails from Gombe State, was mistreated, brutalised and then
locked up perpetually over the course of several years on the orders of a certain Brigadier General MS Adamu during the
course of a special joint military assignment in Taraba State, which later resulted in the said Abbas Haruna losing his mental stability and general body health.”
Isa while lamenting the traumatising of Adamu added, “The story, as narrated by the victim’s wife, Mrs. Hussaina Iliyasu
has it that Seaman Abbas was subjected to such brutal and injurious conditions because he was purportedly absent from his duty post for just a few minutes after telling his boss, Brigadier General MS Adamu, that he just took few minutes
off his duty post to pray, according to military witnesses who later informed Mrs. Hussaina Iliyasu about what happened, it wasn’t as if the duty post was completely unmanned since
there were other colleagues of the assaulted Seaman guarding the post.”
While urging the Naval Chief to ensure justice is meted sai, “These are very worrying allegations, which require that the Chief of Naval Staff intervenes to cause an investigation to
be made so that the facts of what actually happened can be established and made public, and so that the tensions building up across various segments of the Nigerian society
because of this sad incident can be calmed down. As such, I call on the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral EI Ogalla, and all relevant authorities to quickly swing into action and investigate this matter in the interest of justice for Seaman Abbas Haruna, his family and Nigerians in general. Anything short of this will only help in causing members of the public to lose faith in our military.”
