Gombe State is taking a significant step forward in combating hepatitis C, particularly among high-risk populations like those who inject drugs. Dr Habu Dahiru, the state’s Commissioner for Health, is leading an international study tour to explore innovative care models for hepatitis C.
PERISCOPE NIGERIA reports that this initiative is part of a global network that includes Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Egypt, with Gombe State being the sole participant from Nigeria.
Dahiru emphasised the importance of this collaboration, stating that it’s a strategic move to enhance Gombe’s healthcare capabilities in addressing hepatitis C.
He noted, “Being the only state in Nigeria participating in this project is proof of our commitment to public health excellence.”
The goal is to adopt and adapt global best practices to eliminate hepatitis C among high-risk populations using integrated and community-based approaches.
The project aims to eliminate hepatitis C worldwide through an evidence-based, integrated approach targeting high-risk groups. It focuses on strengthening healthcare systems, comprehensive study protocols, diagnostic algorithms, and tailored models of care.
The study tour will cover various aspects of hepatitis C treatment, including testing and screening eligibility, clinical testing protocols, and community-based interventions, with an emphasis on psychosocial support for holistic care.
Dr Dahiru is optimistic about the project’s impact, saying, “We are not only learning but also positioning Gombe State as a model for hepatitis C elimination in Nigeria.” This initiative aligns with Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s healthcare reforms, prioritising disease prevention, control, and elimination in the state.
Gombe State’s efforts in healthcare are impressive, with previous initiatives showing significant results, such as conducting thousands of free surgeries for hernia, hydrocoele, trachoma, and screening for breast and cervical cancer. The state’s commitment to healthcare is evident, and this project is another step towards achieving excellence in public health.
