A charity event aimed at providing 5,000 naira to 5,000 children turned disastrous on Wednesday when a massive crowd surged at the Islamic High School in the Bashorun area.
Eyewitnesses report that the event, which was intended to support underprivileged children, quickly spiraled out of control as the number of attendees far exceeded the expected 5,000.
As the crowd struggled to gain entry, the situation rapidly deteriorated, resulting in a chaotic and devastating scene.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the government confirmed the swift deployment of a rapid response team to the scene. Victims were rushed to various hospitals across Ibadan for urgent medical care.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, was commended for mobilising all available medical response teams to assist in managing the situation. The government pledged its commitment to supporting the victims and their families during this difficult time.
