The Federal Workers Forum has passed a vote of no confidence in the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, citing their failure to protect the interests of Nigerian workers.
According to a press release signed by Comrade Andrew Emelieze, National Coordinator of the FWF, “the NLC/TUC have failed the Nigerian workers. We have lost hope in labour and we cannot continue to deceive ourselves.”
The statement was dated December 7, 2024 which was obtained by our correspondent.
The FWF criticised the NLC/TUC leadership for their handling of the recent minimum wage negotiations, describing the ₦70,000 minimum wage as “starvation wages” and “wickedness visited on the workers.”
The group also accused the labour leadership of being corrupt and out of touch with the ideals of the labour movement. “There is massive corruption in the trade unions and their leadership is not different from what is obtainable with the decadence obtainable in Nigeria,” the statement read.
The FWF is calling on the NLC/TUC leadership to step down and for workers to reject the current leadership. The group is also demanding that the federal government pay outstanding arrears and salaries owed to federal workers and implement a cost of living allowance to cushion the effects of the economic hardship facing Nigerian workers.
“We are giving our final warning to Mr President to address the hunger and hardship crisis confronting we the federal workers and the masses at large else we will not hesitate to pass a vote of no confidence on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” the statement concluded.
