Gombe State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Asma’u Iganus, has assured Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities on Tuesday promised that the state governor would assent the bill upon his return.
Iganus made this disclosure at the state secretariat of JONAPWD located at kasuwa mata, Gombe, during 2024 International Day for Persons with Disabilities, with the theme ‘Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for a sustainable inclusive future’.
“The governor will assent the disability bill in earnest when he returns. On my left is a counsellor from Dukku, that is inclusiveness from the governor. I’m assuring that the governor will assent the bill,” she said.
Iganus also noted that efforts were on to expand JONAPWD state secretariat, adding “There is also effort to expand your office.”
Earlier, JONAPWD appealed with the Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, to assent the disability bill recently passed by the house of Assembly.
Speaking, Chairman Gombe State chapter of JONAPWD Ishaku Adamu, said so far the state has scaled about four out of five hurdles in domesticating the rights of PWDs.
He lauded the current administration for prioritising the rights of PWDs, saying that the association has never gotten as much support.
He said, “The theme challenges us to ensure that PWDs are not only included in decision-making processes but are also empowered to lead. Leadership by PWDs is fundamental to achieving sustainable development, as it brings unique perspectives that enhance problem-solving and foster inclusive growth.
“On behalf of the community of PWDs in Gombe State, I wish to express our profound gratitude to his Excellency, the executive Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for his unwavering commitment to the disability community in Gombe State. His leadership in ensuring the passage of the Gombe State Disability Bill demonstrates dedication to the inclusion and welfare of PWDs.
“This landmark achievement, following 15 years of persistent advocacy, is a testament to His Excellency administration’s resolve to address the needs of the most vulnerable in our society.
“We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to our esteemed partners civil society organisations, development agencies, and individuals who continue to support the cause of disability inclusion.”
Adamu continued saying, “While we celebrate the milestones achieved, we must not lose sight of the crucial next step: the assent of the Gombe State Disability Bill. This singular act will breathe life into the provisions of the bill, ensuring that the rights of PWDs are not only acknowledged but protected and upheld.
“I appeal to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Gombe State, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya to give his esteemed approval to this transformative legislation. It will serve as a foundation for programs, policies, and initiatives that will change lives and set a standard for inclusion across the state.”
