The efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in allowing justice to take its course regarding local government financial autonomy are highly commendable, as it holds the potential to drive grassroots development in various sectors. On July 11, 2024, the Supreme Court delivered a landmark judgment affirming the financial autonomy of Nigeria’s 774 local government councils, which was hailed as a significant step forward for democracy and local governance.
This judgement brought hope to millions of Nigerians, especially those in rural communities, who had long anticipated that the autonomy of local governments would address the multidimensional economic, security, and infrastructural challenges at the grassroots level. Unfortunately, the implementation of this judgment has faced resistance from state governors, many of whom are unwilling to comply with the directive. This situation calls for serious legal action against any state governor who remains adamant about the implementation of local government financial autonomy.
While it is often said that “better late than never,” the delay in implementing local government autonomy is taking a heavy toll on the masses. The economic conditions of millions of households have been severely affected by some of the harsh policies of the Tinubu-led administration. Therefore, it is crucial for President Tinubu to ensure the swift and successful implementation of local government autonomy, as this will provide much-needed relief for Nigerians, especially in the face of current economic challenges.
Rural communities can only truly experience the presence of government when local government autonomy is guaranteed and sustained by the federal government. Local governments serve as the closest welfare centers to the citizens, offering services that are often more accessible and immediate than those provided by state and federal governments.
It is now imperative for President Tinubu and other key stakeholders to take decisive action and explore all available legal avenues to ensure the effective implementation of the Supreme Court’s verdict. This will free local governments from the 17 years of bondage imposed by state governors and empower them to better serve the Nigerian people.
