A stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja, has resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 10 people, including seven children.
The incident occurred this morning as thousands of residents from nearby communities scrambled to collect palliative distributions organised by the church.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the chaos unfolded between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM, with some individuals having arrived as early as 4:00 AM to secure their share of the relief materials. The surge of the crowd, estimated to be over 3,000 people, led to the deadly stampede.
Padre Mike Nsikak Umoh, National Director of Social Communications at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, confirmed the incident while acknowledging that details are still emerging.
Many separate stampedes occurred within a short time, highlighting the desperate conditions facing many Nigerians.
Similarly, a stampede during a rice distribution in Okija Community, Anambra State, also resulted in fatalities, with videos circulating online showing some residents lying dead.
This follows the tragic incident in Ibadan, Oyo State, where 32 children died in a stampede during a children’s carnival. The event, intended to distribute free food and N5,000 cash to 5,000 participants, descended into chaos due to overcrowding and inadequate planning.

These recurring stampedes underscore the severity of hunger and economic hardship gripping Nigeria. With thousands of families struggling to meet their basic needs, the desperation for relief aid has become evident. The overwhelming turnout at these events, exceeding organizers’ expectations, reflects the widespread poverty and the immense challenges faced by many Nigerians.
In Abuja, a combined team of police, military, and DSS officers was deployed to the church premises to restore order and disperse the crowd.
