Nigerian musician Speed Darlington popularly known as Akpi, has filed a N300 million fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for what he claims was unlawful detention.

The case, set for hearing on January 13, 2025, was adjourned after Darlington’s lawyer, Abubakar Marshal, requested more time for the police’s counsel, Garba Audu, to review the documents served.

The lawsuit follows an incident on December 23, 2024, when a Federal High Court issued a directive for the police to either charge Speed Darlington or release him within 48 hours. Darlington was detained after being arrested on charges of defamation and cyberstalking related to comments he made about singer Burna Boy.

The court had earlier intervened in the case, ordering the police to release Darlington immediately, pending the resolution of the matter. His lawyer confirmed that the release was executed, and the case for enforcement of Darlington’s rights will continue on January 13.

At the hearing, Darlington’s legal team accused the police of violating his client’s rights, alleging torture and inhumane treatment during the detention. Darlington seeks damages for the unlawful detention and demands his immediate release or production before the court.

Meanwhile, the singer’s trial is scheduled for January 15, 2025, but the police have yet to respond publicly. The case has drawn attention due to the ongoing legal disputes between Darlington and Burna Boy, alongside the broader issue of fundamental rights violations in Nigeria.
