The Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, on Thursday inaugurated an eight-member committee to oversee the preservation of museums and monuments in the state.
The committee is a sequel to government concern and commitment towards ensuring the preservation of historical sites and artifacts in a manner that project the identity of the people of the state.
Inaugurating the committee, Yahaya who was represented by the Secretary to Government of the State, Professor Ibrahim Njodi, charged members of the committee to bring their wealth of experience to bear in developing the tourism sector to attract tourists, saying “it will boost the culture and tourism sector of the economy.”
The committee was also mandated to develop strategies for identifying and acquiring relevant historical, cultural, scientific and artistic items for the proposed Gombe State Museum.
They are equally expected to assess the condition of the historical sites, suggest strategies for developing those sites and coordinate activities related to proper preservation of the sites and monuments in Gombe State.
The state government also tasked the committee to develop guidance and support to all local authorities and stakeholders on preservation of such sites.
Responding, the chairman of the committee who doubles as the Commissioner for Information Culture and Ethical Orientation, Mijinyawa Tilde, appreciated the state government for the opportunity to spear head the initiative that will rewrite the history of Gombe State and for the benefit of the generation yet unborn.
He pledged the commitment of the committee members to work diligently towards achieving the plans of government.
The eight-member committee has the commissioner ministry for Information Mijinyawa Tilde as Chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Isa Director General GMC, Dr Usman Isa Ya’u, a historian from the Gombe state University; Yakubu Sarma SSA General Duties, Alhaji Yaya Hammari, Barrister Sani Ahmed Haruna, ALGON Chairman; and Alhaji Abdulfatah Aliyu Dan’amar Kaltungo, while Professor Muazu Shehu Permanent Secretary/Principal Private Secretary to the state Governor will serve as the secretary to the committee.
