Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has criticised the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited over its invitation to tour the revamped Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, describing the gesture as disrespectful.
Speaking through his spokesperson, Kehinde Akinyemi, Obasanjo noted that the invitation lacked the formality befitting a former president of Nigeria. He accused NNPCL of failing to properly notify him about the tour, adding that the approach was an insult to his office.
Obasanjo also faulted NNPCL for rejecting Aliko Dangote’s $750 million offer to manage the Port Harcourt and Kaduna refineries, questioning the company’s ability to oversee the facilities effectively.
Obasanjo’s aide stated, “Is that the right way to invite a former president of the country? Who says Baba has even seen the statement or read the news? It is a total disrespect for the office of the former president.
“Ask the NNPCL that as of January 2, have they written to him? Is there any official letter addressed to him, inviting him to the refinery?
“It is an absolute insult, and the former president cannot dignify such with a response.”
NNPCL’s spokesperson, Olufemi Soneye, has yet to comment on the matter.
