Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has expressed concerns over the tax reform bills currently before the National Assembly, describing the recommendations of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) as a positive but insufficient step.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa Service, Ndume stated that while the NGF’s decision to review the bills was commendable, there are still unclear sections requiring further clarification.

He urged the federal government to ensure transparency and involve the public in discussions to foster a unified stance on the proposed legislation.

The senator, who has been critical of some policies of the Bola Tinubu-led administration, warned that the reforms could impose additional burdens on the poor and advised Tinubu to withdraw the bills for further review.

Ndume also emphasized the importance of allowing legislators and the public to participate in addressing any gaps in the legislation.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa service, Ndume stated, “What the governors did is a welcome development, but it is not enough because we still do not have comprehensive understanding of the bills.”

“There is a need for transparency. The process should not be rushed as this would lead to making mistakes.

“The door for correcting the mistakes has been opened now, unlike before when it was closed and the bills left as they were. The work is now with the legislators and the general public,” he added.

Continuing the lawmaker added, “The door for correcting the mistakes has been opened now, unlike before when it was closed and the bills left as they were.”

The tax reform bills have faced significant criticism, particularly in northern Nigeria, with many alleging they represent an anti-north agenda.
