Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party’s presidential candidate has given an explanation of why he has made significant donations to programs promoting empowerment, healthcare, and education.

When a journalist questioned him about his decision to donate more than N1.5 billion to humanitarian causes in 2024 while visiting the Anglican Bishop of Nnewi, Rt. Rev. Ndubisi Obi, Mr. Obi emphasized that his charitable endeavours are motivated by a sincere concern for people rather than by self-promotion.

Obi mentioned two initiatives that motivate him to keep giving: the N10 million he donated to Bishop Ephraim Ikeakor for the College of Nursing Sciences in Amichi and another N10 million he gave to Bishop Ndubisi Obi for continuing work at ADON College of Health Technology in Nnewi.

He clarified that the ability to make a significant difference in people’s lives and the apparent results of such endeavours are what drive his charity.

“Even before my public life, I have always derived satisfaction from contributing to worthy causes that uplift humanity. For instance, I was in Haiti after the earthquake, where I contributed to its rebuilding. Similarly, even before I became Governor, I had extended help to places in need according to my capacity,” Obi said.

He shared memories of his visits with Bishop Ndubisi to various facilities, including the Diocesan Rehabilitation Centre for drug abuse victims and a school for children with special needs. He expressed how deeply touched he was by the Bishop’s unwavering dedication to uplifting the vulnerable. “When you witness such selfless service to humanity, contributing becomes inevitable – not for applause, but for the greater good,” Obi stated.

In response to whether his philanthropy was aimed at enhancing his public image, Obi dismissed the idea. He explained that giving back is his way of fulfilling moral and spiritual responsibilities, as well as repaying the society that shaped him. He pledged to sustain these efforts for as long as God continues to bless him with the means.
