A Federal High Court sitting in Benin City has ordered the service of originating processes and a motion for perpetual injunction on the Inspector General of Police, the Nigeria Police Force, and others in a case involving alleged police harassment of Henry Omoregie, the immediate past President of Benin Club.
The case, marked FHC/B/CS/18/2025, was filed by Omoregie, who claims that the General Investigation Department of the Force CID Abuja has been harassing and intimidating him at the behest of Ikhide Okaisabor, an expelled member of Benin Club. The alleged harassment is said to be over issues related to membership of the club, which is a purely civil matter.
Hon. Justice B.O. Quadri granted the order for service after hearing Omoregie’s counsel, Douglas Ogbankwa Esq. The matter has been adjourned to March 5, 2025, for hearing.
According to the originating process, Omoregie is seeking declarations that the constant invitations by the respondents amount to harassment, intimidation, and a threat to his fundamental rights. He is also seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining the respondents from further harassment and intimidation.
“The constant invitations by the respondents on the request of Ikhide Okaisabor amount to harassment, intimidation, and a threat to my fundamental rights,” Omoregie stated in his affidavit. “I am seeking the court’s protection from this abuse of police powers.”
Omoregie’s counsel, S.I. Amu Esq., noted that the case is a clear example of police harassment and intimidation. “We are confident that the court will grant our client the relief he seeks and put an end to this abuse of power,” he said.
The respondents have been ordered to appear in court on March 5, 2025, to show cause why the reliefs sought by Omoregie should not be granted.
