Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Yahaya, has emphasised the need for a tax reform bill, stressing that the current laws are outdated and require improvement.
“Whether we like it or not, overtime, there is a need for us to review the laws and improve upon where there are shortcomings,” Yahaya said.
The governor, who is also the Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, made this statement on Monday while hosting the Arewa Consultative Forum at the Government House chamber. He highlighted the economic hardship faced by the North despite its abundant natural resources.
Yahaya urged the region to look inward to address its challenges, particularly in the areas of security and economic development. “We need to go back to the drawing board… We need to revisit our values, norms, and social interaction,” he emphasized.
On security, Yahaya expressed concern over the prevailing situations in the North-East, North-West, and North-Central. “The current situation that is prevailing in the North-East, with the issues associated with insurgency and Boko Haram… What befell North-West where brothers are killing brothers, fighting about the scarce resources that we have not been able to manage,” he lamented.
Yahaya assured the Arewa Consultative Forum of his support for their 25th anniversary and promised to work with other governors to achieve the region’s development objectives. “Myself and my colleague governors will stand by you and we will give you the required support,” he pledged.
Arewa Consultative Forum Chairman, Mamman Mike, called for concerted efforts towards achieving development and urged residents of the region to support their governors. “We can achieve this because we have the conviction… We are upstanding guided by our governors to operate in a no relentless manner,” Mike said.
