Spain’s High Court has found former football federation president Luis Rubiales guilty of sexual assault for kissing player Jenni Hermoso without her consent during the 2023 Women’s World Cup awards ceremony.
The court fined Rubiales over €10,000 ($10,434) and issued a restraining order preventing him from approaching within 200 meters of Hermoso or communicating with her for one year.
Rubiales, 47, had faced potential prison time, but the court acquitted him of coercion charges. Three co-defendants accused of pressuring Hermoso to say the kiss was consensual were also acquitted.
The case sparked widespread debate in Spain over sexism in women’s football and overshadowed the national team’s World Cup victory. Rubiales maintained throughout the trial that Hermoso had consented to the kiss.
The fine, set at €20 per day for 18 months, was part of the court’s ruling. Hermoso’s lawyer was not immediately available for comment.
