Following the spate of substance abuse among students in Gombe State, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control on Thursday organised catch them young in Government Science Technical College to dissuade them from indiscriminate use of drugs.

PERISCOPE NIGERIA reports that the ‘Catch them Young’ presented the agency the opportunity to inaugurate ‘NAFDAC Consumer Safety Club’ to raise awareness about counterfeited drug and food in their communities.

Speaking, Director-General of NAFDAC Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, who was represented by the Gombe State Coordinator Pharmacist James Agada, decried the influence pressure in substance abuse, adding that it has made many make uninformed decisions.

Adeyeye said, “Avoid peer pressure, do not use drugs. Don’t allow such habit to be formed. Concentrate more on your studies, don’t allow yourself to be affected by pressure. Substance abuse has altered the course of many students in life; making some addicts, sick, rape and kill themselves or others.”

While appealing to teachers to draw near to their students, Adeyeye disclosed that due to the appreciable amount of time spent by students in schools, teachers are better placed to identify, correct without ridicule, “Our teachers have roles to play. We enjoin teachers to point out things that they see because they (students) spend considerable time with the students. If they can’t talk to people at home they should be able to talk to you. Do not stigmatise any students using drugs,” she added.

On the essence of NAFDAC safety clubs Adeyeye added, “The club is targeted at the youth to support war against fake drugs and products. If you see someone that is producing things within your communities, neighbourhood we expect you to report to your teachers. If you see people making substandard water, cream if you are a member of NAFDAC safety consumer we expect you to be agent of change; use your knowledge to assist in information flow on our regulatory activities. Is not that you should go and fight them but you can give valid information that will help change this narrative.”

In his welcome remarks, Principal of GSTC Barunde, Muhammad Magaji, lauded NAFDAC’s initiative describing it as timely, “this campaign against drug abuse which is on catch them young is a good one and it’s timely. We hope it will deconstruct their mindset on substance abuse,” he added.
