The Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) has warned that a nationwide telecom blackout could occur due to the ongoing diesel supply disruption caused by a strike by Petroleum Tanker Drivers.

ATCON President, Mr. Tony Emoekpere, in a statement on Sunday, said fuel supply disruptions are critically affecting telecom base stations, putting millions of mobile and internet users at risk.

Emoekpere, added that the strike, “which stems from the persistent harassment of tanker and petroleum product drivers by police officers in Lagos State, has effectively halted all truck loading operations and fuel movements.”

He noted that many telecom sites are running low on diesel, warning that without urgent intervention, a total network blackout could occur, disrupting mobile and internet services, emergency response systems, and daily communications.

ATCON has called on Lagos and Ogun state governments to intervene by ensuring the release of diesel from depots to telecom operators.

“This is not just a telecom issue—it is a national emergency that could cripple economic activities and compromise public safety,” Emoekpere stressed.

The association urged security agencies and petroleum unions to resolve the crisis swiftly, warning that prolonged disruptions could severely impact businesses and individuals relying on stable communication networks.
