Not less than five people were feared dead on Friday following a violent clash between security operatives and members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, commonly known as Shi’ites, during a ‘Freedom for Palestine’ protest in Abuja.
The demonstration, which took place near Banex Plaza in Wuse 2, was part of International Quds Day, an annual event held in solidarity with Palestinians.
Eyewitnesses reported that tensions escalated when security forces, including military personnel, attempted to block the protesters’ route after Jummah prayers.

While official casualty figures remain unconfirmed, IMN spokesperson Sidi Munir Sokoto claimed that at least five protesters had been killed, describing the incident as a clear abuse of power.
The clash led to panic in the Banex Plaza area, disrupting businesses and causing widespread fear among residents and traders.
Efforts to reach security agencies for comments were unsuccessful, but sources indicate that an investigation into the incident may be underway.
The confrontation highlights ongoing tensions between the IMN and Nigerian authorities, as the group’s protests have frequently been met with heavy-handed security responses in recent years.
