The bill also outlines a framework for the election process for these positions.

This legislation is among 32 Constitution amendment bills that cleared the second reading stage in the House on Thursday. Among them is a bill seeking to amend the 1999 Constitution to allocate specific seats for women in the National Assembly and state houses of assembly, aiming to enhance gender representation in governance.

Another notable bill proposes a reduction in the timeframe for resolving pre-election petitions and the establishment of pre-election tribunals. It also seeks to regulate the suspension process for National Assembly members.

Additionally, a bill aimed at reviewing the qualifications for individuals aspiring to the offices of President, Vice-President, Governors, and Deputy Governors also passed the second reading.

Further constitutional amendments include a bill addressing the Federal Capital Territory’s status in relation to the election of Nigeria’s President. Additionally, bills advocating for the creation of Wan State and Gobir State successfully moved to the next legislative stage.

So far, approximately 113 Constitution amendment bills have successfully passed second reading, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s constitutional review process.
