The Rural Health Mission Nigeria, has highlighted the organisation’s efforts in providing healthcare support to communities affected by flooding in Gombe, Bauchi, and Yobe states.
Disclosing this recently during a press briefing held at the organisation’s office in Gombe, Chief Executive Officer Mohammed Sadiq, that the support is under their community project, the “Community Recovery and Resilience Project,”
Our correspondent reports that the project is funded by the Centre for Disaster Philanthropy, a US-based organisation.
“The Community Recovery and Resilience Project aims to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in rural communities vulnerable to natural disasters, especially flooding, which destroys facilities, prevents access to quality health services, and causes outbreaks of cholera,” he added.
The CEO noted that last year, severe flooding hit several communities, including Mai Kaho in Gombe, Gamawa in Bauchi, and Nangere in Yobe, resulting in significant damage to health facilities.
He said, “The flooding was devastating, and we saw six health facilities completely destroyed in Gamawa, while seven were flooded in Nangere. In Mai Kaho, only one health facility remained operational,” Sadiq revealed. In response, Rural Health Mission Nigeria has taken steps to renovate the health facilities. “We have renovated one health facility in Gamawa, and another is currently under renovation in Nangere.”
In addition to infrastructure support, the organization is also focusing on maternal healthcare saying “We distributed life-saving birth kits to pregnant women in the affected communities. A total of 50 pregnant women in each community received the kits, along with some financial assistance, to ensure safe delivery and reduce maternal mortality rates.”
The birth kits are designed to provide essential medical supplies for safe delivery, and the financial assistance is intended to support the women in accessing healthcare services adding “This support is crucial in reducing maternal mortality rates and ensuring that pregnant women have access to quality healthcare services.”
He harped on the importance of Community Recovery and Resilience Project underscoring Rural Health Mission Nigeria’s commitment to improving healthcare access and outcomes in underserved rural communities. “Our organisation is dedicated to providing healthcare support to communities in need, and we believe that every individual deserves access to quality healthcare services, regardless of their location or socio-economic status,” he said.
While lauding the organisation’s donor Centre for Disaster Philanthropy’s funding Sadiq noted that their intervention enabled Rural Health Mission Nigeria to implement the Community Recovery and Resilience Project, which has made a significant impact in the affected communities stressing “We are grateful for the support of the Centre for Disaster Philanthropy, and we believe that our efforts will make a lasting difference in the lives of the people we serve.”
