The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his ongoing infrastructural development and efforts to improve Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in Abuja.

However, the union has called for a more empathetic and balanced approach to revenue collection, particularly regarding enforcement strategies tied to ground rent payments.

In a statement signed by NUJ President, Alhassan Yahya, which was obtained by PERISCOPE NIGERIA the union expressed concern over the recent trend of property enforcement actions, such as the sealing of hotels and businesses for non-compliance with financial obligations.

While acknowledging the importance of boosting IGR and maintaining compliance, the NUJ warned that these measures—if not handled with sensitivity—could have negative consequences for businesses, employment, and the overall perception of the FCT as a hospitable environment.

“We believe that the imposition of substantial financial burdens without due consideration for the severe hardships faced by ordinary citizens risks undermining the very well-being of the FCT’s residents,” the statement read.

The union stressed the need for the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to adhere strictly to due process and legal frameworks when carrying out enforcement actions. It warned that perceived high-handedness or disregard for the rule of law could deter investors and damage public trust.

“Maintaining the rule of law is fundamental to attracting and retaining both local and international confidence,” the NUJ emphasised.

The union also highlighted concerns about the potential international implications of aggressive revenue enforcement. It noted that actions which may be viewed as heavy-handed or insensitive could tarnish Nigeria’s image abroad, deter foreign investment, and contradict the democratic ideals the country upholds.

In its final appeal, the NUJ called on Minister Wike to reassess current strategies in favor of more people-centered policies.

“We believe that a more measured and empathetic approach is crucial to safeguard the credibility of the FCT Administration and, by extension, the Tinubu Administration,” the statement concluded. “Development in the FCT must be pursued with humanity, empathy, and unwavering adherence to democratic tenets and the rights of citizens.”
