A Governor born for the Moment When Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya assumed office as the Governor of Gombe State in 2019, he inherited not only the challenges of governance but also a fractured political atmosphere. Yet, through a commitment to continuity and progress, he has become a symbol of unity in a divided democracy.

Continuity as a Cornerstone

One of Governor Inuwa’s first executive decisions was to continue all uncompleted and abandoned projects left by his predecessors. This gesture earned him early praise and reflected his belief that development must not be stalled by politics.

Finishing What Others Started

From roads to hospitals and schools, Governor Inuwa’s administration ensured that resources already committed were not wasted. Projects such as the Ibrahim Dankwambo Motor Park and several township roads were completed, changing the narrative of wasteful governance.

Education at the Forefront

Understanding that no state can thrive without a strong educational system, Governor Inuwa Yahaya made massive investments in this sector. He constructed three ultra-modern mega-schools across the state capital to cater to growing student populations.

Reviving Secondary Schools

He didn’t stop at new constructions. The Government Comprehensive School in Dadin Kowa and Science Secondary School in Ladongur were rehabilitated and upgraded with labs, hostels, and staff quarters, giving them new life.

Basic Education Boosted

Through timely payment of counterpart funding to the State Basic Education Board, the state accessed federal grants for more classroom blocks, furniture, and learning materials across Gombe’s 11 local governments.

Bridging Islamic and Formal Education

Recognising the influence of Qur’anic education in the region, the governor built modern Tsangaya schools. These institutions integrated Islamic and secular curricula, improving literacy and life skills among Almajiri children.

Rising Educational Rankings

The result of these interventions was swift and clear: Gombe State climbed to the top in national exams like WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB, a feat that brought pride to the state and confirmed that the investment was worthwhile.

Revolution in Healthcare

Governor Inuwa’s health agenda was both ambitious and people-centred. New general hospitals were constructed in Kumo, Bajoga, and Kaltungo, each equipped with facilities that meet global standards.

Federal Recognition and Expansion

The federal government took note of these strides. It took over the General Hospital in Kumo and upgraded it to a Federal Medical Centre, making it a reference point in the Northeast.

Healthcare at the Grassroots

In a record-breaking move, 114 Primary Health Centres were established in every political ward of Gombe State. These centres are stocked with modern equipment and staffed to offer services like maternal care and immunization.

An Unmatched Road Network

Under the “Network 11-100” initiative, the governor aimed to construct 100 kilometres of roads in each local government area. Today, that promise has been kept and exceeded, opening up rural communities to economic opportunities.

Agriculture for Sustainability

The Yahaya administration supported farmers with improved seeds, mechanization, and access to markets. Irrigation facilities were expanded, especially in the Balanga and Yamaltu/Deba areas, leading to higher yields and rural wealth.

Clean Water for Every Home

The government revitalized old water schemes and drilled new boreholes across communities. These actions greatly reduced waterborne diseases and freed women and children from the daily burden of water fetching.

Foundations for the Future

Not just content with building, Governor Inuwa laid foundations for monumental projects for an ultra-modern abattoir in Gombe, aimed at improving food hygiene and creating jobs, a new State Secretariat, a new State High Court complex, and a new Gombe State House of Assembly to meet the future needs of the state.

A New Urban Vision

He also began developing the New Shehu Abubakar District an entirely new urban centre equipped with modern housing, road networks, and green spaces. It is the first of its kind in the Northeast.

Electricity Regulation Trailblazer

The establishment of the Gombe State Electricity Market and Regulatory Commission marked a bold new chapter in energy governance, placing Gombe among the few states with energy oversight frameworks in Nigeria.

Building an Industrial Future

Perhaps his most ambitious economic project is the Muhammadu Buhari Industrial Park. Located along the Dadin Kowa axis, the park is set to attract both local and international investors, generating jobs and income for the state.

Jobs and Empowerment

Youth and women were not left behind. Through skills acquisition centres, entrepreneurship programs, and MSME funding, thousands found new paths to self-reliance, lowering the unemployment rate in the state.

Infrastructure for All Sectors

From schools to markets, from town halls to courts, Governor Inuwa Yahaya has touched every sector with durable infrastructure that speaks of long-term planning and meticulous implementation.

Touching Lives Through Governance

More than buildings and policies, it is the lives changed that define Governor Inuwa’s legacy. Families with access to clean water, children in safe classrooms, and farmers with bountiful harvests all testify to a government that worked.

Security and Stability

In coordination with federal agencies, his administration invested in local security architecture providing logistics and support to security forces and community vigilantes. This created one of the safest environments in the region.

Transparency and Accountability

The governor’s commitment to open governance was reflected in every year’s town hall meetings, accessible budget documents, and public engagement initiatives. This restored trust between the people and the government.

A Leader Loved by His People

As he nears the end of his second term, many Gombe residents express concern: “Who can match Governor Inuwa’s vision and integrity?” There’s a widespread sentiment that if constitutional limits allowed, he would be re-elected indefinitely.

Praise from Across the Aisle

Even members of the opposition admit the development witnessed under his leadership is hard to ignore. Governor Inuwa Yahaya became a reference point in regional leadership and good governance.

Challenges Weathered

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, economic downturn, and insecurity in neighbouring states, his government stayed focused. He built a resilient governance model that withstood national shocks and local complexities.

Institutional Legacy

Governor Inuwa didn’t just build infrastructure he built institutions. The laws, commissions, and frameworks he established will guide Gombe for decades to come, regardless of who occupies the seat next.

Inspired Young Leaders

His success has inspired a new generation of Gombe youth to consider careers in public service not as a means of enrichment, but as a path to service and impact.

Will Gombe Witness Another Inuwa?

As citizens ponder the post-Inuwa era, a common question echoes in streets and homes: “Will Gombe ever have another leader like him?” The answer remains uncertain, but his legacy sets a high bar.

A Chapter Closed, a Legacy Eternal

As the curtains gradually draw on Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s tenure, what remains is a legacy carved not just in stone, but in the hearts of the people. Gombe State may never be the same again and for that, history will remember him.
