After intense backlash from Nigerians, Bola Tinubu has been forced to delete a misleading tweet where he erroneously claimed to have met the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, upon his arrival in Rome on Saturday night ahead of the solemn Mass marking the beginning of the pontificate of His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV.
Tinubu, in a now deleted statement shared via his verified X handle @officialABAT, said he was hosted to a dinner by His Eminence Cardinal Parolin.
In the post, Tinubu described the meeting as one marked by “a spirit of fraternity and a shared vision for the future”.
But Nigerians on X were confused to see someone else misrepresented as Cardinal Parolin by Tinubu.
Reacting, @PO_GrassRootM on X said “After intense backlash from Nigerians, Bola Tinubu has finally deleted the misleading tweet about the Vatican yesterday. This incident is yet another reminder that Nigeria needs a forward-thinking, digitally aware leader like Peter Obi not one who clings to outdated ideologies and surrounds himself with relics of the past.
Another X user, @Nwaadaz, wrote “, Wait, Tinubu don delete this post? this man too like fake things.
This development underscores the glaring incompetence among the president’s media handlers.
