The Senator representing Borno South, Senator Ali Ndume, has clarified that a previous report linking him to an attack on former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), in Borno State was inaccurately presented.

The former Senate Leader issued this clarification in a statement he signed on Monday in Abuja. He explained that the ‘Buratai’ he mentioned referred to a town in the Biu Local Government Area of the state, rather than the former chief who shares that surname.

While appearing as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Sunday, Ndume expressed alarm over the rising insecurity in the region.

He detailed the severity of the violence in the area. He added that a violent exchange of gunfire occurred between the assailants and military personnel during the attack on Buratai last Friday.

“We are in a dire security situation. Just two days ago, Buratai was attacked at the front operations base in Borno. Some soldiers responded gallantly, but the insurgents managed to destroy several military assets,” he had said.

Less than 24 hours after his initial interview, the senator clarified that he was not speaking about the immediate former Chief of Army Staff.

“The attack targeted Buratai town, not the Ex-COAS”, Ndume clarified.

Coincidentally, the former service chief originates from the same Buratai town in the Biu Local Government Area of Borno State.

Buratai served as Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff from 2015 to 2021 and played a key role in the nation’s counterinsurgency efforts.
