…Celebrates legacy, leadership, and loyalty
With a blend of nostalgia, pride, and a deep sense of purpose, the Government Science Secondary School (GSS) Gombe Old Students’ Association held its eight Annual General Meeting (AGM), uniting distinguished alumni who have risen to national prominence. The event, held in the school’s historic compound, drew old boys and girls from across the country, many of whom are now movers and shakers in Nigeria’s economic, political, and social sectors.
The meeting was graced by the presence of the Governor of Gombe State and Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, Alhaji Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, a proud alumnus of the institution. Though unavoidably absent, he was ably represented and conveyed heartfelt greetings, goodwill, and gratitude to the association’s leadership for preserving the spirit and legacy of the school, which was established in 1954.
Represented by his deputy, Dr Manassah Daniel Jatau, expressed delight over the contributions made by various sets of the association.
He observed that Nigeria’s current economic situation calls for greater support for the underprivileged and suggested that the old students’ charitable activities be extended to other sections of society for broader impact.
While commending the unwavering commitment of the current leadership of the Old Students’ Association, the governor emphasised that leadership is about sacrifice and positive influence. He advised the incoming leadership to uphold resilience and diligence in their services.
He also disclosed that the relocation of the Gombe State College of Nursing and Midwifery to its permanent site is scheduled for October this year.
Yahaya called on students to take their studies seriously in order to become future contributors to the school’s legacy, and to avoid actions that could tarnish their reputation, that of their families, religion, and the school.
“I may not be an old student, but today I stand on behalf of one, or could be referred to as an adhoc member,” said the governor’s representative. “Governor Yahaya sends not just his regards, but his promise to continue supporting the great work being done by the alumni for the betterment of this institution.”
He charged the incoming executive members with the words: “Leadership without sacrifice is an illusion. Influence your followers through service.” The event not only celebrated past achievements but also renewed the collective commitment to the school’s continued excellence.
The outgoing president, Dr Mohammad Bose Ahmed, highlighted the touching account of the Set of 1979’s Golden Jubilee celebration hosted by Governor Inuwa Yahaya, where he put aside the airs of public office and reconnected with old classmates as “ordinary Inuwa.” The camaraderie, laughter, and nicknames exchanged painted a vivid picture of enduring friendship and humility.
Also noteworthy was the February 2025 visit of the school’s second principal, Alhaji S.A. Ladan, facilitated by Governor Yahaya. The visit stirred powerful emotions, as Mr. Ladan struggled to recognise the vastly improved facilities—a testament to the alumni’s dedication.
The outgoing president remembered departed members with prayers and tributes, underscoring the enduring bond that unites them beyond life itself.
Dr Mahammad Bose Ahmed called on members of the association to remain united devoid of any differences in order to forge ahead.
He urged the election process which will see the new executives in place, be conducted peacefully and solicited for the same cooperation of members accorded to them be given to the new incoming officials to enable them succeed.
The Guest Speaker, Professor Rufa’i Ahmed Alkali, commended the leadership of the association and delivered a speech on the dynamics of Nigeria’s politics and the prospects of sustaining democracy in the nation.
Principal Abubakar Sadiq Suleiman welcomed all dignitaries and recalled the school’s humble beginnings in 1954 with only 72 students and three teachers, to its current enrolment of 1,859 students and 93 teaching staff. He proudly noted that the school recorded an impressive 93 percent pass rate in WAEC and 86 percent in NECO last year.
He appreciated the contributions of the different sets of the School particularly Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya who constructed roads, classrooms, hostels, and staff Quarters among others. He appealed for buses, transformer, furniture and construction of a kitchen for the school.
Mrs Rose Simon delivered the vote of thanks appreciating the governor, his deputy, the representative of the Emir of Gombe and all those who made the programme a success.
