President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has assumed the role of Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, succeeding Bola Tinubu, whose two-term tenure has officially concluded.

The transition of leadership took place during the 67th Ordinary Session of the Authority, held in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, where Tinubu formally handed over the reins to his Sierra Leonean counterpart.
This development put to rest earlier speculations that Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye had been selected during a private meeting ahead of the session.
In his inaugural address, President Bio outlined four key priorities for his term: restoring constitutional order and strengthening democracy, enhancing regional security cooperation, advancing economic integration, and reinforcing institutional credibility.
Tinubu first took up the ECOWAS leadership in Guinea-Bissau on July 9, 2023, and was re-elected a year later in Abuja.
His extended leadership aimed to provide continuity and momentum in addressing regional challenges related to security, reconciliation, and development.
