The Arewa Christian Youth Leadership Forum has commended the Taraba State Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, for signing into law the bill establishing the Taraba State University of Tropical Agriculture and Climate Action, located in Gembu, Sardauna Local Government Area.
The law was signed at the TY Danjuma House in Jalingo, marking what the group described as a “historic stride” in the advancement of education in Northern Nigeria and a proactive step in addressing global issues related to climate change, sustainable agriculture, and environmental preservation.
In a statement issued by its National Chairman, Dunijir Gatama, on Tuesday described the initiative as a bold and visionary move that will not only boost academic development but also position the Mambilla Plateau as a strategic hub for research, innovation, and regional diplomacy.
“We heartily commend the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Agbu Kefas, for this landmark initiative. This university blends education, climate action, and international cooperation in a way that benefits the entire African subcontinent,” Gatama stated.
He said the university’s location on the resource-rich Mambilla Plateau will further enhance regional collaboration, particularly with neighbouring Cameroon.
“We see this as a platform for promoting bilateral academic and environmental collaboration with the Republic of Cameroon,” he added.
The group emphasized the importance of the institution in empowering young people with relevant knowledge to tackle modern challenges, particularly within underserved communities.
“By focusing on agriculture and climate action, this institution will prepare a generation of climate-literate, solution-driven, and socially responsible leaders,” Gatama said.
As a forum dedicated to promoting godly leadership and youth empowerment, ACYLF called for inclusivity in the implementation and access to the new university.
“We urge the government to ensure the university is inclusive and accessible, particularly to marginalized groups including Christian youth, indigenous communities, and women. It must reflect the rich diversity and potential of Taraba State,” the statement read.
Gatama concluded by pledging the forum’s support for initiatives that promote education, peacebuilding, innovation, and youth participation across Northern Nigeria.
“We look forward to partnering with like-minded institutions to support the realisation of this university’s vision,” he said.
