A Journalist, Comrade Erasmus Ikhide, narrowly escaped death in a devastating road traffic accident involving a Dangote cement truck on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, along the Benin-Sapele Expressway in Benin City.
The truck, reportedly traveling at high speed, careened out of control and collided with Ikhide’s Toyota Salon car, causing it to somersault three times. Fortunately, Ikhide escaped unhurt, but the incident has sparked renewed concerns about road safety and the regulation of heavy-duty trucks plying the Benin City metropolis.
Calls for Stricter Regulations:
This incidence amongst others has prompted calls for stricter safety measures and regulations for heavy-duty trucks, plying the roads in Edo State.
Members of the public urge the authorities concerned to take proactive steps to prevent such accidents and ensure accountability. The community demands compensation for victims’ families and the deployment of a permanent FRSC emergency unit in Sapele Road to curb similar incidents.
Recent Similar Incidents
There have been other reported incidents involving Dangote trucks in Nigeria, including, a Dangote truck that crashed into a Mercedes-Benz, killing three people and injuring one on August 18, 2025.
Another Dangote Cement truck crashed into five vehicles and a motorcycle, leaving 24 people injured at Odukpani Junction in Ondo State, while another occurred in Asaba, Delta State where a Dangote truck lost control and rammed into traders and passersby, killing at least eight people and injuring many others.
Ikhide has written over 12 series on fatal road traffic accidents caused by Dangote’s trucks with the titled “Federal Republic Of Aliko Dangote”, that prompted the allegations that the Journalist may have been targeted for assassination for his outspokenness.

More worrisome is the fact that the Dangote truck that collided with the Journalist vehicle around the Ekai Market axis of Sapele Road sped of in the presence of eye witnesses.
As we enter the “ember months”, in a couple of days, the Edo State Ministry of Transport, Federal Road Safety Commission and Nigerian Police Edo State Command should be more alive to their responsibilities.
Offending truck drivers should be apprehended and sanctioned to stem the tide of this menace on the roads of Benin City and other Metropolis within Edo State and the country.
