A ₦1 billion Small Hydropower–Solar PV Hybrid System with a 620KW capacity has been launched at the Balanga Dam in Gombe State.
PERISCOPE NIGERIA reports that the project, funded by the European Union (EU), the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), and implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), is expected to boost electricity supply, create jobs, and enhance agricultural productivity in the region.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held Friday at the Balah-Waja Palace in Talasse, Balanga Local Government Area, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya—represented by his Deputy, Dr Manasseh Daniel Jatau—described the initiative as a “watershed moment” for Gombe State.
He said the project aligns with his administration’s people-oriented policies aimed at improving livelihoods and expanding access to development opportunities.
“For those following the journey of this administration since May 29, 2019, our focus has always been on security, infrastructure, healthcare, education, electrification, and industrialisation. The launch of this 620KW Hydropower–Solar Hybrid System is not just timely but inevitable in our pursuit of sustainable development,” the governor said.
He emphasised that reliable energy supply offers wide-ranging benefits—powering homes and businesses, driving industrial processes, improving health and education, and raising overall living standards.
He urged residents of Balanga and the wider Gombe community to take ownership of the facility, stressing the need to safeguard government and donor-funded projects.
The event drew dignitaries including Mrs. Inga Satefanowicz of the EU delegation; Dr. Abba Aliyu, Managing Director/CEO of REA; Ambassador Philbert Abaka Johnson, UNIDO Regional Director; Hon. Mohammed Saidu Fawu, Gombe State Commissioner for Water, Environment and Forest Resources; Hon. Sanusi Ahmed Pindiga, Commissioner for Energy and Mineral Development; Hon. Ibrahim Salihu Jatau, Chairman of Balanga LGA; and His Royal Highness, Mohammed Danjuma Muhammad, the Balah-Waja, among others.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s gratitude to the development partners, noting that their collaboration would help drive self-reliance, economic sustainability, and improved welfare for Gombe residents.
“This project is a great push, a great support, and we remain ever grateful to the EU, REA, GEF, UNIDO, the Federal Government, and all stakeholders involved,” he added.
