The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Women Committee in Gombe State has elected a new leadership team to steer its affairs for the next four years.
The election, held on Wednesday at the NLC Secretariat in Pantami during the committee’s 6th Quadrennial State Delegates Conference, had the theme “Gender Equality for a Sustainable Future.” Delegates from various affiliated unions attended.

In the keenly contested polls, Christy Garba (National Union of Teachers), Rahab Maina, and Aliya Salihu emerged as chairperson, deputy chair, and secretary respectively, defeating the incumbents who had sought re-election. Other positions, including assistant secretary, public relations officer, and ex-officio member, were returned unopposed.
Administering the oath of office, Returning Officer Naomi Nancy Adi — Vice National Chairperson of the NLC Women Committee and representative of NLC National President Joe Ajaero — declared the process peaceful and credible. “There were no complaints from any quarter, and the outcome was accepted by all,” she said.
In her acceptance speech, Garba described the day as “memorable” and pledged to defend the interests of women workers.
“We will ensure full participation of women in union activities and politics. The confidence reposed in us will not be taken for granted,” she said.
State NLC Chairman Yusuf Bello congratulated the new leaders, stressing unity.
“There are no winners or losers here. Both new and outgoing executives must work together for the progress of the union,” he said.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Asmau Iganus, underscored the importance of women in leadership.
“Women’s active participation in leadership positions is critical for societal advancement and equitable opportunities,” she said.
State Commissioner for Education, Aishatu Umar Maigari, who chaired the event, called for collective action on gender equality.
“Empowering the girl child through education is crucial for sustainable development,” she noted.
Represented at the event, NLC National President Joe Ajaero said the Congress remained committed to gender equality in line with its gender policy and international labour standards.
“Constituting the Women Committee structures across all levels ensures proper coordination in promoting women’s active participation in trade union leadership,” he said.
