Drug trafficking has become a grave threat to Nigeria’s image, safety, and future. While the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other security agencies have recorded commendable arrests of traffickers in airports, bus stations, and even private homes, the scale of the problem shows that we are far from victory. Nigeria is now frequently mentioned in foreign news reports for drug-related arrests involving our citizens, both at home and abroad. This is not only tarnishing our international reputation but also making it harder for law-abiding Nigerians to be trusted when travelling or doing business overseas. It is deeply worrying that some of those arrested are young people, often driven by poverty, unemployment, or deception by criminal syndicates.
We must admit that the government’s current approach, though laudable, is not enough. Stronger measures are urgently needed, including tougher prosecution and sentencing for offenders to serve as a real deterrent. There is also the need for massive youth empowerment and job creation to reduce the lure of criminal networks, as well as wider community education campaigns that involve schools, religious leaders, and influencers. In addition, our borders must be better secured, and intelligence sharing with international partners must be strengthened to cut off drug routes before they reach our communities.
Drug trafficking is not just a law-enforcement problem—it is a national security and public health crisis. If left unchecked, it will continue to destroy families, rob our youth of their future, and stain Nigeria’s global image. I call on the government to step up the fight with the urgency and seriousness it demands. The war on drugs can be won, but only with firm political will, sustained funding, and the active cooperation of every citizen.
