The Coalition of Arewa Youth Groups, an umbrella body comprising over 63 registered youth organisations across the 19 Northern states, has warned political parties and allied groups against moves to sideline the North ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, signed by Alhaji Muhammad Muhammad, Publicity Secretary of the coalition the group expressed concern over what it described as “political maneuverings within some of the 18 registered political parties” that appear designed to weaken the region’s relevance in national politics.
“We view this as not only unjust but also a direct threat to the principles of fairness, inclusivity, and national cohesion upon which our democracy must stand. Any attempt to deny Arewa its rightful place in the political equation will not be tolerated,” the statement partly read.
The coalition cautioned that any party, movement, or support group found to be undermining Northern interests would face immediate withdrawal of its members and structures across the 19 states.
“Such a party or group will be disowned and publicly rejected by our coalition, and we shall mobilise against its acceptance in the region,” the statement added.
The group further stated that it would not align with or support any political arrangement that seeks to marginalize the North.
“The 2027 elections present an opportunity for Nigeria to strengthen its foundation of justice and fairness — and we shall not allow Arewa to be treated as an afterthought in that process,” Muhammad added.
While stressing its commitment to the unity, peace, and progress of Nigeria, the coalition insisted that inclusivity and equitable power-sharing must be respected.
“We therefore call on all political stakeholders to embrace fairness and ensure balanced representation of all regions. Anything less will be met with total resistance from the North,” the coalition added.
