The Young Nigerian Rights Organisation (YNRO) and its Lead Activist, Comrade Victor Ojei, popularly known as Wong Box Nigeria, have announced plans to sue the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Bright Edafe, and the Delta State Police Command over what they described as a “deliberate fabrication” aimed at criminalising the activist.
The controversy stems from a social media post by the PPRO alleging that the police had launched a “manhunt” for Comrade Ojei. According to YNRO, the activist was at that very moment inside the office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), State Intelligence Department, together with both the ACP and the PPRO, while awaiting the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Administration.
“This was not only false, but a calculated attempt to damage my reputation, integrity, and standing in society,” Ojei said.
The activist and his organization said they would issue a Pre-Action Notice against the Delta State Police PRO and the Command before filing a lawsuit at the Federal High Court to enforce his fundamental rights and seek damages for defamation.
YNRO described SP Edafe’s actions as “unprofessional, unbecoming of a police officer, and consistent with his pattern of misconduct.” The group alleged that the PPRO has a history of personalizing matters, particularly against critics of his office.
The organization also accused senior officers in the Delta Command of mishandling petitions. It alleged that petitions filed against the PPRO and a Divisional Police Officer were wrongly diverted by the DCP Administration, contrary to proper procedure.
“The way petitions are transferred from the Commissioner of Police’s office to divisions is against due process and must be investigated,” Ojei added.
The group has therefore called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to:
Set up a Force Disciplinary Committee to investigate the allegations of misconduct.
Address what it termed systemic corruption in the Delta Police Command.
Ensure that police officers do not use their positions to settle personal scores.
Comrade Ojei vowed that the campaign for accountability would continue.
“We will continue to expose these corrupt practices and call for accountability. Nigerians deserve a Police Force that upholds the law, not one that manipulates the truth to destroy reputations,” he declared.
The YNRO further disclosed that additional evidence of misconduct and corrupt practices within the Delta State Police Command will be formally presented to the IGP in due course.
