First day of the 2027 Elections Scenarios and Election Manipulation Risk Index (EMRI) Retreat on Friday set the stage for deep reflection on Nigeria’s democratic future, with stakeholders emphasizing the need for early reforms to strengthen electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The retreat brought together a cross-section of experts, policymakers, INEC officials, civil society leaders, and development partners, who engaged in robust discussions around key issues shaping Nigeria’s electoral landscape.
Participants examined INEC’s level of preparedness, the urgency of timely leadership appointments within the commission, and the importance of a credible and transparent voter register as the foundation of free and fair elections. Also central to the discussions were the adequacy of election funding, the role of technology, and how artificial intelligence (AI) can be leveraged to enhance transparency, detect manipulation, and strengthen citizens’ trust in the process.
Speakers stressed that lessons from previous elections must guide future reforms, urging proactive measures to address challenges such as logistics failures, misinformation, and political interference.
The EMRI initiative seeks to develop tools for assessing and mitigating risks that could undermine the credibility of Nigeria’s 2027 elections, while promoting peace, accountability, and public confidence in democratic institutions.
The retreat continues with more technical sessions and scenario-building workshops designed to help stakeholders chart a roadmap for credible, inclusive, and peaceful elections in 2027.
