The political landscape in Enugu State is set for a major shake-up as Governor Peter Mbah, alongside members of his executive council and a number of state lawmakers, will officially defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.

The APC made the announcement in a statement on Friday, describing the development as a “watershed moment” for the party in the South-East region. The defection ceremony is expected to take place in Enugu, with top national leaders of the APC, including members of the National Working Committee, governors, and federal lawmakers, scheduled to attend.
According to party sources, arrangements have been concluded to receive Governor Mbah and his team in a grand ceremony that will symbolically mark the end of PDP’s dominance in Enugu State politics.
An APC chieftain who spoke on condition of anonymity said the governor’s defection followed months of high-level consultations and negotiations aimed at strengthening the party’s foothold in the South-East ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“This is not just about one individual; it’s a collective realignment of political forces in Enugu. Governor Mbah’s coming into the APC is a huge boost, and it sends a clear signal that the ruling party is now the preferred platform in the region,” the source stated.
Governor Mbah, who was elected under the PDP in 2023, is expected to be joined by several commissioners, aides, and lawmakers from both the state and national assemblies.
Political observers say the defection could significantly alter the balance of power in the South-East and reshape alliances ahead of the next election cycle.
As of press time, the Enugu State Government has not issued an official statement on the planned defection, but a senior government official confirmed that “consultations are ongoing and the governor will make his political position known to the people of Enugu soon.”
The APC is expected to roll out a massive rally at the Michael Okpara Square, Enugu, to welcome the new entrants into the party fold.
