A former Majority Leader and Deputy Minority Whip of the Gombe State House of Assembly, Hon. Markus Wina, has called for the zoning of the 2027 governorship position to either Gombe South or Central Senatorial District, saying it is time to correct the imbalance in the state’s political leadership.

In a statement issued in Gombe on Friday, Hon. Wina described the current political structure as “historically lopsided,” stressing that Gombe North has held the governorship for over two decades since the return of democracy in 1999.

“Since 1999, Gombe North has produced governors for about 20 out of 28 years. This prolonged dominance has denied other zones their rightful opportunity to contribute to the leadership and development of our dear state,” Wina added.

He explained that equitable rotation of power among the three senatorial zones—North, Central, and South—would foster unity, inclusivity, and sustainable development, ensuring every part of the state has a sense of belonging.

“The principle of federal character enshrined in our constitution emphasises fairness, equity, and inclusivity,” he stated. “It is our collective duty to make sure that every zone in Gombe State has a sense of ownership and equal opportunity in governance.”

Wina urged political stakeholders to embrace the spirit of fairness by supporting a power shift to Gombe South or Central, whichever produces the most competent candidate for the 2027 election.

“This is not about politics of exclusion,” he clarified. “It is about ensuring every zone contributes its own leadership ideas for the progress of our state. Gombe South and Central have capable leaders who can take the state to greater heights.”

The former lawmaker, a respected voice in Gombe politics, appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, political actors, and citizens to unite behind the call for rotational governance, which he said would strengthen democracy and inclusiveness.

“I call on all stakeholders—traditional, religious, and political—to support rotational governance as a path to peace and balanced development. Together, we can build a Gombe State where every zone has a voice and every citizen feels represented,” Wins said.

He maintained that the time had come for fairness to take precedence over political convenience, noting that inclusivity is the foundation of sustainable development and unity.

“Let us make 2027 the year Gombe sets a new example for fairness and justice in leadership,” he added.
