The Gombe State Executive Council on Monday reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining peaceful co-existence between farmers and herders, warning that migrating herders should stay away from the state until the end of the harvest season.

Disclosing this at the Gombe Arena shortly after the 50th SEC meeting presided over by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Zubair Umar, said the reminder was in line with the state’s established protocol for maintaining harmony between herders and farmers.

Umar urged farmers to leave crop residues on their farmlands after harvest to enable herders graze their animals without conflict.

He said, “As we all know, Gombe remains the safest state in the North-East due to the proactiveness of the government and the cooperation of members of the public. However, recent reports reaching the government indicate that some herders and farmers are breaching certain protocols put in place by the state.”

According to him, the state government had earlier stipulated that herders should not move into the state until after the completion of the harvest season, while farmers were advised to leave the stumps on their farms for grazing.

“As a government that places a premium on security, any potential breach of this understanding will trigger proactive action by the authorities,” Umar added.

He further disclosed that the council noted with concern recent attacks on security personnel in the state and warned perpetrators to desist.

“Council observed with dismay that some members of the public have attacked security agencies who are only carrying out their lawful duties. The government values its relationship with the security agencies and will do whatever it takes to ensure they are protected.

“We call on residents to continue cooperating with security personnel so that the peace we enjoy in Gombe will be sustained,” he added.
