The story of Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi is one that resonates deeply with the timeless tale of rising from modest beginnings to national prominence. Born into humble circumstances, he grew—through sheer determination and disciplined hard work—into a distinguished scholar, administrator, and statesman celebrated across Nigeria. His journey is a living illustration of Henry Fayol and Van Dyke’s assertion that “some succeed because they are determined to.”

Born on January 13, 1959, in Kaltungo Local Government Area of Gombe State, young Ibrahim began his educational journey at L.E.A. Primary School, Kaltungo (1967–1973), and later ECWA Primary School (1973–1975). His path to leadership began early. At Government Teachers’ College, Jama’are (1975–1980), he developed a passion for service that would shape his life’s trajectory.

He proceeded to the University of Maiduguri, where he earned a B.Sc. in Physical and Health Education (1985). After completing the mandatory National Youth Service Corps in Abuja (1985–1986), he served as a classroom teacher at Government Teachers’ College, Chinade. His academic voyage formally began in 1987 when he joined the University of Maiduguri as a Graduate Assistant. He obtained a Master’s Degree in Health Education (1991) from the same institution and later crowned his academic pursuits with a Ph.D. in Public Health Education (2003) from the revered University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

From his student days, Prof. Njodi displayed deep-rooted leadership qualities. He served as Secretary and later President of the National Union of Kaltungo District Students (NUKADS) and the Tangale-Waja Students’ Union. At the University of Maiduguri, he held key student leadership roles—including President of NAPHER-SD and Secretary-General of NUBASS—demonstrating the clarity, empathy, and strength that would define his later public service.

His academic career at the University of Maiduguri stands as a model of excellence and loyalty. Between 2008 and 2010, he served as Acting Dean, Faculty of Education, before becoming the substantive Dean in 2010, the first alumnus to attain that office. His upward trajectory continued: he became Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Services) from 2010 to 2014 and was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, serving from June 3, 2014, to June 3, 2019. Notably, he was the first alumnus to serve in these exalted positions.

A prolific scholar, Professor Njodi has participated in numerous national and international conferences and authored more than 50 academic publications spanning journals, book chapters, and technical works. His contributions extend beyond the university system, touching communities, states, and international organisations.

For his service, he has received many distinctions, including the prestigious National Productivity Order of Merit (NPOM) award bestowed by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. In 2021, he was honoured as a Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he also serves on the Board of Trustees.

His community recognitions are equally impressive. The Mai Kaltungo honoured him with the revered title of Madakin Kaltungo, while the Shehu of Borno conferred upon him the title of Shettima Ilmuye of Borno, granting him membership in the Shehu’s Council. Professor Njodi holds over thirty (30) traditional titles from different parts of Nigeria, a testament to his broad national acceptance and community impact.

In politics and governance, his competence continues to speak for him. He was appointed Secretary to the Gombe State Government (SSG) by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, during the Governor’s first tenure (2019–2023). In recognition of his exceptional capacity, loyalty, and administrative acumen, he was reappointed SSG on June 1, 2023, a position he continues to hold with distinction.

The renowned motivational philosopher Jim Rohn once said, “Success is something you attract by the person you become.” Professor Njodi embodies this truth. His life mirrors excellence, resilience, service, and an unwavering commitment to uplifting others.

He is happily married and blessed with children.

Today, we proudly present to you Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi—Madakin Kaltungo, Shettima Ilmuye of Borno, Ikemba I, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, and the distinguished Secretary to the Gombe State Government—an icon of scholarship, leadership, and service.
