A member of the Abia State House of Assembly representing Ukwa East State Constituency, Hon. Lewis Chinemerem Obianyi, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Labour Party (LP).
The lawmaker announced his defection during plenary on Tuesday at the Abia State House of Assembly complex in Umuahia, where he formally tendered his resignation from the PDP and declared his new political affiliation with the Labour Party.
Obianyi, while addressing the Speaker and his colleagues, explained that his decision was taken after wide consultations with his constituents and key political stakeholders within his constituency. He said the move was in line with his commitment to align with a political platform that, in his view, better reflects the yearnings and aspirations of the people he represents.
According to him, the Labour Party offers a more people-oriented agenda that prioritizes good governance, accountability, and inclusive development, especially at the grassroots level.
The Speaker of the House acknowledged Obianyi’s letter of defection, which was subsequently read on the floor of the House, and urged lawmakers to remain focused on their legislative responsibilities despite political realignments.
Obianyi’s defection adds to the growing list of politicians switching allegiance ahead of future political contests, and is expected to further reshape the political landscape of Abia State, particularly in Ukwa East Local Government Area.
PERISCOPE NIGERIA gathered that the move could strengthen the Labour Party’s presence in the state legislature, while posing new challenges for the PDP in maintaining its influence within the House.
