Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing health reasons.

In a letter dated December 1 and addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the 63-year-old former governor informed the President of his decision to step down. President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and expressed gratitude for Badaru’s service to the nation.
A replacement is expected to be communicated to the Senate later this week.
Badaru Abubakar, a two-term governor of Jigawa State (2015–2023), was appointed Defence Minister on August 21, 2023. His resignation comes at a time President Tinubu has declared a national security emergency, with further details of the plan expected to be announced soon.
