The Igbo Community resident in Sokoto State has extended a rare gesture of compassion and communal solidarity by providing Christmas meals to all inmates of the Sokoto Correctional Facility, in an act it described as a commitment to humanity and shared goodwill.

The initiative, which benefited about 1,300 inmates, was inspired by the disposition of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who is currently detained at the facility. According to community leaders, Kanu expressed a preference not to be singled out for special treatment during the festive season, prompting the community to adopt a more inclusive approach.

“We were moved by the understanding that no one should celebrate alone, especially during Christmas,” a leader of the Igbo Community in Sokoto said. “Rather than providing meals for one individual, we made a conscious decision to extend the gesture to every inmate in the facility.”

The community said the action was guided by core Igbo values, particularly Onye Aghana Nwanne Ya—the principle of being one’s brother’s keeper—alongside universal ideals of charity, compassion, and fellowship.

“This was purely a humanitarian service, carried out without discrimination of tribe, religion, or circumstance,” another community representative explained. “Christmas is about love, sharing, and hope, and we wanted everyone within those walls to feel remembered and valued.”

Officials at the correctional facility reportedly welcomed the gesture, describing it as a morale-boosting act that brought relief and a sense of inclusion to inmates during the holiday period.

The Igbo Community expressed hope that the initiative would send a broader message beyond the prison walls.

“Our prayer is that this small act of kindness contributes to peace, unity, and understanding in our society,” the community stated. “Humanity should always come first.”

The statement was issued by the Igbo Community, Sokoto State Chapter, as part of its Christmas outreach activities, reinforcing its commitment to peaceful coexistence and communal harmony in the state.
