The Gombe State Police Command on Thursday announced the assumption of duty of Commissioner of Police Umar Chuso, as the 24th Commissioner of Police in the state.
CP Chuso officially took over from CP Bello Yahaya, who was recently redeployed by the Inspector-General of Police to the Police Staff College, Jos.
Speaking shortly after assuming office, CP Chuso called for the sustained cooperation of residents and stakeholders to enhance security across Gombe State.
“Effective policing cannot be achieved without the support of the people. I am appealing for the continued cooperation of all stakeholders as we work collectively to confront crime and other social vices in the state,” he said.
The new Commissioner emphasised his commitment to community-based policing, describing it as a key strategy for crime prevention, intelligence gathering, and strengthening police community relations.
“My priority is to deepen community-based policing through intelligence-led operations and mutual trust between the police and the public,” CP Chuso added.
CP Umar Ahmed Chuso hails from Sokoto South Local Government Area of Sokoto State. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and joined the Nigeria Police Force on June 10, 1994, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. He received his professional training at the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State.
Before his posting to Gombe, CP Chuso served in several strategic positions, including Commissioner of Police, Nasarawa State Command, Deputy Commandant, Police Staff College, Jos, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations), Kano State Command. He also served as Deputy Commissioner of Police, CID, Kano, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Operations, Delta State, and Pioneer Area Commander, Argungu, Kebbi State.
He has held other notable assignments such as CSP Administration, Kebbi State Command; Directing Staff at Police College Kaduna; Divisional Police Officer in several divisions across Sokoto, Kebbi, and Kano States, as well as postings at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Interpol Section, Abuja.
CP Chuso has attended numerous professional courses locally and internationally, including Citizenship and Leadership Course, Advanced Detective Course, Tactical Leadership and Command Course, Protection of Human Rights Course at Texas Southern University, Houston, USA, and the Higher Military Strategy Course at the Army War College, Abuja. He is a Member of the Nigerian Institute of Police Studies (MNIPS).
He further called on traditional rulers, community leaders, youths, religious bodies, and residents of Gombe State to actively support the police.
“Security is a collective responsibility. I urge traditional rulers, community leaders, youth groups, and religious organizations to partner with the police by sharing credible information and supporting community policing initiatives,” he said.
The Commissioner reassured residents of his resolve to protect lives and property and to sustain peace and security in the state.
“I assure the people of Gombe State of my unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property and the maintenance of peace and harmony across the state,” CP Chuso stated.
CP Umar Ahmed Chuso is married with children and enjoys reading and playing badminton in his leisure time.
