Two brothers, Raymond Edowonyi (23) and Osahon Edowonyi, have been arraigned before the Evbuoriaria Magistrate Court II, Benin City, over the alleged theft and destruction of property valued at over ₦8 million, belonging to one Mr. Douglas Ogbankwa of Umelu Community.

The defendants were brought before the court on December 22, 2025, on a multi-count charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing, unlawful possession, and willful destruction of property, contrary to provisions of the Edo State Criminal Law of 2022.
According to the prosecution, led by ASP Peter Abi, the alleged offence occurred on December 14, 2025, at Amadin Street, Umelu Community.
“The defendants are accused of unlawfully breaking into the complainant’s property and willfully damaging three aluminum windows valued at ₦1 million,” the prosecutor told the court.
ASP Abi further informed the court that the brothers allegedly stole four sliced aluminum window glasses and were found in unlawful possession of high-value steel protectors worth ₦7 million, all belonging to the complainant.
“The defendants were apprehended in possession of the steel protectors, which they could not reasonably explain how they came by,” the prosecutor said.
The prosecution noted that the offences contravene Section 412 of the Edo State Criminal Law (conspiracy and unlawful possession), Section 353 (willful and unlawful damage), and Section 337 (fraudulent possession of stolen property).
Legal observers at the court described the matter as a serious felony case, noting that the high monetary value of the allegedly stolen items elevated it beyond a routine burglary charge.
The presiding magistrate, Osemwengie Endurance, adjourned the case to January 6, 2026, for further mention.
Speaking briefly after the proceedings, a resident of Umelu Community, who preferred anonymity, said the incident had unsettled residents.
“This case has caused concern in the community because of the scale of destruction and the value involved. People are watching closely to see how justice will be served,” the resident said.
