The Deputy Governor of Gombe State, Manassah Jatau, on Thursday called on residents of the state to take collective responsibility for security, stressing that peace must not be left solely in the hands of security agencies.
Jatau made the call while delivering an address at the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, marked with the launching of the remembrance emblem and laying of wreaths, at the Pantami Township Stadium, Gombe.
“Security is too important to be left to security agencies alone. Everyone must cooperate by providing timely information,” he said.
He commended security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders and community stakeholders for sustaining peace in the state, noting that the relative calm enjoyed in Gombe was a product of sacrifice and vigilance.
“The peace we enjoy in Gombe State did not come by chance. It is the product of sacrifice, vigilance and collective responsibility,” Jatau stated.
He reminded Nigerians that Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed annually on January 15, was instituted to honour officers and men who paid the supreme price in defence of the nation, as well as those who returned from service with permanent disabilities.
“In the pursuit of peace, many paid the supreme price, while others live with permanent disabilities, leaving widows and orphans behind in hardship,” he said.
Jatau explained that the event was also an opportunity to support veterans and families of fallen heroes through the emblem launch, urging individuals and organisations to donate generously to the Nigerian Legion.
“We are expected to donate generously so the Nigerian Legion can assist the families of our fallen heroes and veterans, they were our parents, neighbours and friends,” he added.
The deputy governor also called for an expansion of the scope of remembrance beyond the armed forces, noting that modern security challenges have drawn in multiple law enforcement and volunteer agencies.
“Modern warfare has shown that security is no longer the duty of the military alone. Police, Civil Defence, Customs, Immigration, NDLEA, DSS and volunteers also deserve recognition,” he said.
He urged residents to promptly report suspicious activities, emphasising that early reporting could prevent violence.
“Let me be clear, suspecting someone is not a crime. Reporting early can prevent harm,” Jatau said.
While appreciating the Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs and field commanders for improvements in the nation’s security architecture, he assured them of continued prayers and support from the people of Gombe State.
He also charged leaders of the Nigerian Legion to ensure transparency in the management of donations and to explore sustainable ventures to support veterans and their families.
