The Governor of Gombe State, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to policies and programmes that promote the preservation of cultural heritage, tourism development, empowerment, and community cohesion.

The governor made this known during the 14th Annual Kamo Cultural Day held in Kaltungo Chiefdom, where the community also launched a N100 million appeal fund for the construction of a Town Hall and Museum.

Represented by the Secretary to Government of Gombe State, Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi, Governor Yahaya emphasised that culture should not be viewed merely in terms of dances and songs, but as an economic asset that, when properly harnessed, can stimulate local businesses, promote tourism, create employment opportunities, and strengthen social bonds.

He noted that the government places high premium on the positive role culture plays in societal progress, which informed efforts to establish a Museum and Monument Centre for the preservation of artefacts across the state.

On the proposed Kamo Community Town Hall and Museum project, the governor disclosed that the Ministry of Works and Housing would be directed to conduct a proper assessment with a view to government intervention and speedy completion of the project.

Yahaya commended the Kamo community for consistently organizing the cultural festival over the years, describing it as a testament to the people’s resilience and commitment to cultural promotion and preservation. He urged other communities to emulate the initiative.

In their separate remarks, the Chairman of Kaltungo Local Government Council, Iliya Suleiman; the Commissioner for Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Dr. Barnabas Malle; and the Chairman of the Kamo Community Development Association, appreciated the state government’s efforts in sustaining peaceful coexistence.

They observed that despite security challenges in some neighbouring states, Gombe has remained relatively peaceful, providing a conducive environment for socio-economic activities to thrive.

Also speaking, the guest lecturer, Prof. Salisu Ali Rakum of Federal University Kashere, applauded the community’s vision to build a Town Hall and Museum. He said the initiative underscores the people’s commitment to promoting and preserving their rich cultural heritage for future generations, and appealed to donors to contribute generously.

The highlight of the event was colourful cultural displays by the Kamo people and the N100 million fundraising launch for the Town Hall and Museum project, which was overwhelmingly supported by the Majority Whip of the House of Representatives and member representing Akko Federal Constituency, Usman Bello Kumo (Walin Akko). He was represented at the event by a former member of the National Assembly who represented Kaltungo/Shongom Federal Constituency, Simon Karu.
