A fire incident on Sunday night destroyed part of Mile Six Market in Jalingo, Taraba State.
Eyewitnesses told the PERISCOPE NIGERIA on Monday that the fire started around 11:00 p.m., after traders had closed for the day.
Security sources said the cause of the fire has yet to be ascertained.
An eyewitness, Mr. Yakubu Sunday, said the fire spread rapidly, making it difficult to contain.
“The cause of the fire is yet to be known, but it was spreading very fast. It was very difficult to control because of the intensity of the flames,” he said.
He added, “We were chatting close to the main road when we heard shouts of fire. By the time we got there, the shops in the building were already engulfed in flames.”
A shop owner, Mr. Moses Baba, said he lost goods worth millions of naira in the incident.
“I was at home with my family late in the evening when I received a distress call asking me to rush to my shop. On arrival, I watched helplessly as my shop was completely engulfed by the flames,” he recounted.
The victims have called on the Taraba State Government, corporate organisations, and well-meaning individuals to come to their aid to help cushion the effects of the destruction.
