When news broke of the passing of the distinguished Senator representing Enugu North Senatorial District, many citizens responded with grief, prayers, and tributes. I joined in mourning and also raised a deeper concern: who will step into that seat, and with what vision for the people?

Leadership transitions in moments like this are not merely political events; they are tests of a society’s maturity and foresight.

They invite us to reflect on the quality of leadership we desire and the collective responsibility we share in building the future.

It is in this spirit that the Enugu Diaspora Group for Empowerment (EDGE) emerges as a timely and strategic initiative.

EDGE is not merely another association of citizens abroad. It is envisioned as a nation-building platform rooted in Enugu identity, designed to mobilize Enugu sons and daughters across the world to become ambassadors, investors, and development partners of the state. I feel proud to be reached out to to consult for EDGE in recognition of my labour in the space of nation building.

At the heart of EDGE lies a profound lesson from history and scripture.

The Hanani–Nehemiah Model

The rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem in ancient times offers a remarkable blueprint for development partnerships.

Jerusalem had remained in ruins for years after its destruction. Its walls were broken, its gates burned, and its people exposed to humiliation and insecurity. Yet the rebuilding that seemed impossible was accomplished in just fifty-two days.

The success of that historic reconstruction did not come from government decree alone. It came from a powerful partnership between two men with complementary positions.

Hanani lived in Jerusalem. He saw the devastation firsthand and carried the burden of the people daily. When he travelled and met his cousin Nehemiah, a Jewish official serving in the Persian court far away from home, he delivered a troubling report: the city of their fathers lay in ruins.

Nehemiah was a diaspora Jew, positioned within the structures of power in a foreign land. But his heart remained tied to his homeland. The report from Hanani stirred him deeply.

What followed was extraordinary.

Nehemiah mobilized influence, secured resources, obtained royal authorization, and returned to Jerusalem. Hanani and the people on the ground organized local cooperation. Together, the insider who knew the terrain and the diaspora leader who had access to power and resources formed a strategic alliance.

The result was historic: Jerusalem’s walls were rebuilt in 52 days.

A Lesson for Enugu State

Enugu State today stands at a moment where similar collaboration is urgently needed.

Like many states in Nigeria, Enugu faces challenges of unemployment, infrastructure deficits, youth migration, and economic stagnation in certain sectors. Yet Enugu also possesses one of the most vibrant and accomplished diaspora populations in Nigeria—professionals, entrepreneurs, academics, technologists, and investors scattered across Europe, North America, Asia, and other parts of Africa.

Too often, however, the relationship between those at home and those abroad remains distant and uncoordinated.

EDGE seeks to change that.

The vision is simple but powerful: to institutionalize a partnership between Enugu citizens at home and those in the diaspora, much like the Hanani–Nehemiah collaboration.

Those at home understand the terrain, the needs of communities, and the social realities. Those in the diaspora possess access to global networks, investment capital, technical knowledge, and policy exposure.

When these two forces work together intentionally, the results can be transformative.

Beyond Sentiment: A Platform for Development

EDGE therefore aims to function in three strategic dimensions:

1. Diaspora Ambassadorship

Members of the Enugu diaspora can serve as informal ambassadors of the state—promoting investment opportunities, tourism, education partnerships, and cultural exchange wherever they reside.

2. Investment Mobilization

Through coordinated efforts, diaspora citizens can channel investments into sectors capable of creating jobs for young people in Enugu State—technology hubs, agriculture value chains, manufacturing clusters, and creative industries.

3. Employment Creation

True development is measured not by speeches but by jobs created and livelihoods improved. EDGE intends to connect diaspora investors with local entrepreneurs, institutions, and communities to expand employment opportunities.

*The Question of Leadership*

The passing of the Enugu North Senator has inevitably opened a political conversation about representation.

But beyond the immediate question of who replaces the late Senator, a deeper question confronts the people of Enugu North:

What kind of leadership do we truly desire?

Is it leadership that merely occupies offices?

Or leadership that mobilizes the full potential of the people—both at home and abroad?

The senator who eventually represents Enugu North must understand that development in the 21st century requires diaspora engagement. Modern governance recognizes the diaspora not as distant observers but as strategic partners in economic growth.

*A Call to Enugu Sons and Daughters*

EDGE therefore calls on Enugu citizens everywhere—within Nigeria and across the world—to embrace a renewed spirit of collaboration.

The story of Jerusalem’s walls reminds us that great rebuilding projects are never accomplished by isolated actors. They require unity of purpose, shared vision, and coordinated effort.

Hanani brought the truth from home.

Nehemiah mobilized resources from afar.

The people worked together.

And a broken city rose again.

Enugu State does not lack talent. It does not lack patriotic citizens. What it requires now is a deliberate framework that connects its global sons and daughters with the needs of the homeland.

EDGE seeks to be that bridge.

If the partnership of Hanani and Nehemiah could rebuild an ancient city in fifty-two days, imagine what the sons and daughters of Enugu can accomplish together in this generation.

The time has come to build again.

And this time, we must build together.
