Governor Alex Otti of Abia State will commission a series of projects at Abia State University (ABSU) as part of activities marking the institution’s forthcoming convocation ceremony.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Head of Information at the Government House, Umuahia, and dated March 23, 2026.
The governor is also expected to flag off the construction of additional projects in the state-owned university.
Briefing journalists at Government House, Umuahia, the Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, said the projects slated for commissioning include three rehabilitated hostels—A, B and C.
He added that several new projects would be flagged off during the period, including a proposed Faculty of Law, a cafeteria, 5,000-capacity male and female hostels, and a Faculty of Agriculture.
According to him, the university’s 30th to 32nd convocation ceremonies will hold between March 26 and 27, 2026.
The convocation lecture will be delivered by Bart Nnaji, while honorary degrees will be conferred on notable Nigerians.
Among the awardees are Ooni of Ife, Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi; Allen Onyema; and Stella Okoli.
Kanu further announced that the State Executive Council has approved the handover of the Osisioma campus of ABSU to Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic as its permanent site.
“The Abia State University campus at Osisioma has now been fully handed over to the authorities of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba,” he said, describing the decision as long overdue.
Speaking on the development, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Uche Emeh Uche, clarified that the Osisioma campus had not been in active use by ABSU students, noting that some uncompleted projects funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) were still ongoing.
She disclosed that TETFund had agreed to support the completion of the projects, adding that the new site would provide adequate residential facilities for students of the polytechnic.
According to her, the present location of the polytechnic is non-residential, whereas the Osisioma campus will offer full residential accommodation.
Uche further revealed that the state government has approved the construction of 5,000-capacity male and female hostels, as well as an administrative block at the new site, assuring that the institution would soon relocate to its permanent campus.
